Mark Yu, the human being behind the portable iPhone-enabled TENS unit U-Gym, is back with a crowdfunded project chosen U-Gym Mini, a musculus stimulator intended for pain treatment. AppleInsider went easily-on for a total review.

TENS, or transcutaneous electrical nerve stimulation, is a hurting treatment that uses low voltage electrical electric current to salvage hurting. It can be used for pain relief, for relaxtion after intense exercise, or fifty-fifty used as a passive practise.

"(It's) a safety, ultra-portable and constructive electronic muscle stimulator in treating muscle aches," The Indiegogo page reads. "Its size and weight resembles that of a smartphone. Using its proprietary engineering science, U-GYM Mini provides the same constructive, human-similar massage and helps you relax by reducing musculus pain and lowering stress. Use U-GYM Mini anytime, anywhere, to amend your quality of life and work productivity!"

My old reliable Empi Select TENS unit

I have used a prescription TENS unit for ages, so I have a basis for comparison with the app-enabled unit. U-Gym provided their first unit for review, while they work on making the new U-Gym Mini shown on the crowdfunding campaign.

The U-Gym unit provides a similar stimulation as the unit I've been using for some time. The deviation is, the U-Gym unit is more compact than my normal unit, tin be adjusted from an app on the iPhone over Bluetooth Low Energy, and can manage 4 electrodes from one wire, dissimilar my unit of measurement which requires two cables to control 4 electrodes. The forthcoming Mini unit will be more like to mine, and volition use a wire capable of managing ii electrodes at a time.

Comparing the two, my unit of measurement puts out 0-2500 Hz, the U-Gym unit provided will exercise between 1000-8000 Hz, and the U-Gym Mini will exercise 1000-8000 Hz. What this boils down to is both how boring or apace the pulsations of electrical stimulation tin hit, and what they experience like.

Lower frequency stimulation feels more similar stinging on the skin, where the college frequency is more like massage or accupressure. For most uses I prefer the higher frequency, with the exception of relaxing musculus following practice, where I like to alternating between gently and potent pulsations.

As a TENS unit, information technology worked quite well. The manual gives advice on where to identify the electrode pads, and what default programs might be appropriate. The U-Gym tested has 4 programs, and the forthcoming U-Gym Mini has 2 default programs for musculus relaxation.

The smartphone app for the Mini volition be all new, and will provide program massage, intensity control, massage profile sharing, news updates, weight management, and social media support. The current app does some of this, simply the new app promises to practice it better. The 2 programs on the U-Gym Mini are:

  • used to relieve hurting and fatigue using deep-tissue massage.
  • used to relieve muscle stiffness after sitting or standing for a long time.

Units are sold in pharmacies and retail stores for pain relief, but I've never really given those much consideration. The U-Gym unit of measurement actually surprised me with how well information technology compared to my much more expensive unit. The transmission shows different electrode placement for the dissimilar programs, and at backer packages starting at $69 to receive the device is a very good deal. Retail is prepare at $149 currently.

Conclusions

The U-Gym production works well, and compares favorably with TENS units that price almost 5 times as much. The transmission isn't bad, and the app could be a little more refined, only on the whole, it gives a new user what they need: places to put the electrodes, and advice most which program of pulsations might be used for.

Score: iv.5 out of v

Pros:

  • More than data and flexibility of placement than well-nigh retail options
  • More portable than other options I've owned
  • viii-hr bombardment life

Cons:

  • App is a little clunky today
